TCI EXPO, the world’s largest tree care industry trade show and conference, just wrapped and it was our biggest show ever! Held at the Charlotte Convention Center in Charlotte, North Carolina, TCI EXPO 2018 drew more than 3,800 tree care professionals from across the globe for three days of business, safety and arboriculture workshops and seminars; live tree climbing demonstrations; networking opportunities; a brand new Skills Arena and the chance to visit 264 exhibitors showcasing the latest tree care products and services.
“This was my sixth year in a row attending TCI EXPO,” says Bobby Burritt, owner of TCIA-member company Tradewinds Tree Care LLC of Lahaina, Hawaii. “This was the best east coast trip yet! Crane Crew training at pre-conference was great, and Cynthia Mills’ class during TCI EXPO was phenomenal. The trade show, as always, was epic!”

New this year was the Skills Arena, an action-packed and interactive learning environment complete with instruction and demonstration provided by North American Training Solutions. Many teams competed, but a select few came out on top in chain saw safety and cutting techniques, technical tree climbing, arborist technical rigging and aerial rescue. The winners were treated to a selection of awesome arborist gear, including rope, PPE and more!
This was open to any member who attended the show. All that was required was to stop by TCIA’s membership booth and fill out a raffle ticket. Congratulations to James Matt, owner of Carolina Tree Company, a two-year TCIA member based in Piedmont, South Carolina. James won a NASCAR Intro Experience at Charlotte Motor Speedway!
Every attendee received a form for the ArborBucks drawings. All they had to do was fill it out, put it in the big gold bin, then be present in the tree demo area at the heart of the trade show floor for the drawing. Four drawings were made over the course of the show, each for $600 in ArborBucks, which could then be spent at any of the participating exhibitors at the show.
Congratulations to the four winners: Douglas Muth, CTSP of Giroud Tree & Lawn, Mike Myers of TrueTimber Arborists, Brian Hill of Oak Bros Tree Removal & Stump Grinding and George Montowski of Corporate Risk Solutions.
Student Career Days
In addition to the trade show and conference, TCI EXPO hosted a Student Career Days (SCD) event, which drew nearly 200 college and vocational students representing 23 schools from across the country. These motivated students attended educational seminars, networked with potential employers and explored career opportunities at the industry’s only job and internship fair.
Despite the rain that resulted in cancelling the climbing portion of the Tree Care Skills Competition, students showed up in Freedom Park to compete in the safety gear check and participate in an impromptu oral exam administered by Peter Gerstenberger, TCIA’s senior advisor for safety, standards and compliance. Students also enjoyed Partners in the Park, which included a variety of activities and games hosted by Ahlum & Arbor, Bartlett, STIHL, Schneider Tree Care, Davey, SavATree and Outside Careers.
