Safety Is a Mindset

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics 2014 Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries, 4,821 people – more than 13 per day – died while doing their jobs. In 2016 alone, TCIA learned of 153 tree care-related occupational incidents, 92 of which were fatal. These numbers only include those incidents on which the media accounted.

We don’t have to tell you that treecare is an exciting, but potentially dangerous, industry. You live it every day. We also don’t have to tell you that treecare is safe if you know what you’re doing. The industry is heading into a busy summer season… are you ready?

Safety is more than just wearing the right gear – it’s a mindset. It’s a commitment to yourself to constantly be aware of changing conditions and the activities going on around you. It’s a commitment to your team to communicate when you see unsafe practices. It’s a commitment to your employer and the industry as a whole to be an example of safety and professionalism. And it’s a commitment TCIA makes to you by offering a wide range of industry training programs for you to explore. After all, in this industry, safety is everyone’s responsibility, regardless of age or job title.

TCIA would like to recognize the treecare professionals who have gone the extra mile with their safety training this year. Since the start of 2017, 218 graduates have completed TCIA’s Certified Treecare Safety Professional (CTSP) program. These professionals join a total group of 1,817 CTSPs across the U.S. and Canada who are diligently working toward building a better safety culture 365 days per year.

TCIA wants you and your team to head home safely after work each day. Click here for more information about CTSP, or contact Peter Gerstenberger (Sr. Advisor for Safety, Standards & Compliance) or Irina Kochurov (Credentialing Administrator).
