How do I maintain my certification in CTSP?
In order to recertify, you must obtain a minimum of 30 CEUs and pay a recertification fee every three years.
What are CEUs and how do I get them?
CEUs are Continuing Education Units. These are part of the requirement for recertification every three years. You can earn CEUs in a number of ways:
- by attending professional development - minimum 5 and maximum 15 CEUs
- by teaching or training others in safety - minimum 5 and maximum 15 CEUs
- by documented development of new safety program elements for your company - minimum 5 and maximum 15 CEUs
- by developing new exam questions for the CTSP program - no minimum and maximum 5 CEUs

Will I be notified that my certification is coming up for renewal?
You will be kept up to date on your certification status in several ways. CTSP CEU transcripts are sent to all CTSPs twice a year. You may request that your transcript be sent to you by fax or by e-mail, or you may view, download and print your transcripts online.
In addition, you will be notified three months before your certification expires if you have not obtained the required CEUs.
What happens if I don't have enough CEUs at the end of my certification period?
If you do not accumulate the necessary CEUs or fail to pay the recertification fee when it is due, then your certification is considered void. In other words, the likeliest way to regain your CTSP status is to go through the study and examination again. If you feel there are compelling reasons that you did not obtain CEUs or pay the fee on a timely basis, then you may appeal for re-certification to the CTSP Council. The Council considers appeals on a case-by-case basis.
Why are CEUs required?
"Continuing Education Units", or CEUs, help to insure your professional growth and development as a safety specialist in the arborist profession. The CTSP Council, the independent board that oversees this program, believes in constant learning and growth, teaching and training others, the actual implementation of CTSP's teachings, and contributing to the intellectual property of the CTSP program.
I just sent in some CEUs, can you tell me how long it takes to process them?
CEUs take one to two weeks to be processed once they reach our office. Once they have been processed they are posted to your account and viewable online.
How many CEUs do I have?
You can check your CEUs online by logging into your account using your username and password on the TCIA website: www.tcia.org or by calling at 800-733-2622 or by sending us an email at irina@treecareindustry.org. If you don't have a username and password, please contact us for assistance.
What happens if I let my CTSP certification lapse for any reason?
If you fail to accumulate the necessary contact hours or fail to pay the recertification fee when it is due, then your certification is considered void. In other words, the likeliest way to regain your CTSP status is to go through the study and examination again. You may appeal for re-certification to the CTSP Council. The Council considers appeals on a case-by-case basis.
