Arborwell Professional Tree Management. a TCIA member company, is in the process of completing the GIS inventory of the City of Berkeley’s public trees in collaboration with Berkeley’s IT/GIS Department, the Department of Forestry, and CAL Fire.
The City of Berkeley proposed this project with the purpose of quantifying the benefits of public trees throughout the city. Arborwell is providing them with an inventory with submeter accuracy, made possible through the usage of state-of-the-art GPS technology and iTree Streets, the most cuttingedge software for analyzing costs and benefits. The inventory will include between fifty and sixty thousand trees, and Arborwell is also identifying thousands of future tree planting locations. Due to the magnitude of this project, it is set run into early spring 2013 before reaching completion.
This project was made possible with funding from the California Department of Forestry & Fire Protection, the Urban & Community Forestry Program and Proposition 84.
“This is an exciting endeavor for all involved, and we look forward to a continued relationship with the City of Berkeley and CAL Fire,” says Samuel Oakley, Arborwell’s GIS Specialist.
