On September 10, TCIA submitted comment on an advanced notice of public rule-making (ANPRM) from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA).
The proposal from FMCSA was actually favorable to industry, and TCIA's comments endorsed it. Most tree services operate their vehicles under what is known as a "100 air-mile exemption" from FMCSA's fairly rigorous "hours of service for drivers" - or HOS - provisions.
Currently the HOS exemption allows drivers a total of 12 hours of on-duty time, and the ANPRM proposes to extend this to 14 hours so it is consistent with the maximum on-duty time permitted for covered drivers.
